We traverse the southeastern rim of this volcanic crater ending our journey at the spectacular Minyon Falls.
Your professional guides will impart their knowledge of this truly amazing subtropical and warm temperate rainforest and its environmental and cultural heritage, while you are immersed in nature and pleasantly distracted by views of the impressive peak of Wollumbin and the lush Tweed Valley, and glimpses of the ocean and Cape Byron to the East.

Day 1
7 – 8.6 km | Byron Bay to Sand Ridge Camp
Meals: morning coffee – lunch and dinner
We pick you up from Byron Bay at 8:30 and transport you through the Byron hinterland and into the Tweed Valley, the heart of the Wollumbin caldera. We will stop at the iconic town of Uki for your morning coffee or chai; we collect some fresh bread rolls from the bakery for lunch. We continue to the trailhead at Unicorn Falls carpark where we do a gear check and don our packs. The start our hike takes us through eucalypt forest and to the riparian-lined cascade of Unicorn Falls.
We leave the falls and make our way along the newly opened “old peoples track”. Hells Hole is the unlikely name of our lunch spot; this is the perfect spot to enjoy our freshly made salad rolls for lunch. We then continue onto our first night’s camp arriving in time to settle into the first night in this ancient Gondwana Rainforest.

Day 2
14.7km | Sand Ridge Camp to Yelgun Kyoongun Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today is our most challenging day with over 1000 stairs; we start with a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee. We climb for the first hour reaching lookout 1 with stunning views to Wollumbin across Mount Jerusalem National Park. We spend time walking amongst the ancient old growth blackbutt forest skirting the warm temperate rainforest.
At lookout 2 we will stop for a well-earned rest and lunch soaking up panoramic views of the ever-present Wollumbin in the distance.
Shortly after continuing, we can take a 500m side trip to a third lookout at Mount Jerusalem Cliffs with expansive views across Doon Doon Creek to Doughboy Mountain and the Border Ranges National Park on the opposite side of the caldera. Shortly afterwards we leave Mount Jerusalem National Park and transition into the Nightcap National Park and the vegetation changes again. We hike along the historic Postman’s Track section of the trail, catching a glimpse of the ocean and reach our campsite for the night.
Day 3
11.4km | Yelgun Kyoongun to Weeun Weeun Camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
With most of the climbing done this is a great day to enjoy the wet and dry eucalypt forests as we ascend the ridgeline on some old fire trails.
Lookout 4 is yet another perfect lunch spot with its uninterrupted views across Coopers Creek to Goonengerry National Park. We’ll arrive at Weeun Weeun Camp mid-afternoon and have time to relax and explore.

Minyon Falls
Day 4
5.6km + 6km (return to the base of the falls) | Weeun Weeun to Minyon Falls
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Our last morning offers a bit of a surprise for breakfast before packing up and heading along the cliff tops of the Wanganui Gorge heading towards Minyon Falls, a spectacular 130m single plunge waterfall. We will stroll through undulating terrain and eucalypt forest with several creek crossings again in the warm temperate rainforest.
We’ll have a delicious morning tea at Minyon Falls and enjoy the spectacular views. We then leave our packs behind and enjoy an easy 1 hour walk down to the base of the falls to the plunge pool. This section allows us to look for koalas and experience the forest of palm trees as we approach the base of the falls; enjoying the cool and refreshing water spray as we get close to the falls. It is a 30 minute walk back up to our last view of the falls and a fresh picnic lunch of local produce. We depart the National Park in our private mini-bus driving through the hinterland on the southern side of the caldera, stopping for an afternoon refreshment before arriving in Byron Bay late in the afternoon.
