5-day 4-night walk along the Yuraygir Coastal Walk

Take advantage of walking the Yuraygir Coastal Walk carrying just a daypack, with the luxury of having your gear transported between campsites. This beautiful coastal walk begins at the iconic surfing village of Angourie, just south of Yamba (only 1 hour drive or shuttle bus from Ballina airport). We depart from Angourie Point to follow the coastline and the Yuraygir National Park for 5 days of hiking on unspoiled and pristine beaches and coastal tracks void of anyone else. We have 3 rivers to cross by boat along the way, which adds to the adventure of this unique coastal hike. During the migration season, there is no better time to see humpback whales, either heading north in May to July or heading south in July to October.  During these months, we will be able to view the whales with binoculars we will have on these trips, and by spending extra time on some of the headlands, which we know are great spots for watching the Whales.

We offer a 4-day version of the hike and also an option to stay in holiday house accommodation; please email to enquire about these options.

Spectacular Coastline

The superb coastline features stunning beaches, rivers, lakes and estuaries. We wander past age-old coastal landforms, littoral rainforest, eucalypt forest, woodland and wetlands. There are countless opportunities to look out for dolphins and other marine life, and several endangered native animals on land.

Sections of coastline are completely isolated, and it’s hard to believe that you’re on the north coast of NSW.

What’s Included

During our hikes everything will be provided for you so all you have to do is enjoy and connect

Day 1

13 km | Angourie to Lake Arragan
Meals: lunch and dinner

We pick you up from Yamba at 8:00 (depending on tides) and transport you to Angourie Point. We check our gear and start our journey at the world-famous Angourie Surfing reserve, walking around the point onto Back Beach, the first of the Yuraygir beaches. The first 2 km sets the scene for our 5-day hike with some beach and track walking. We’ll stop at Shelley Headland Campground for some lunch and an explore.

Our journey continues down the coast past Plumbago Headland. We’ll have magnificent views inland of the conical-shaped Clarence Peak and the beautiful waters of Lake Arragan. This is our first night’s camp, grassy tent sites and an almost guaranteed Kangaroo or two to keep us company before we have a delicious dinner beside the campfire, if it’s cool

Lake Arragan

Day 2

13km | Lake Arragan to Sandon River (north)
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Today is our first morning waking with the sound of the ocean in our ears. After packing down and breakfast, we head off walking through the campgrounds of Red Cliffs and Grey Cliffs before ascending on Brooms Head Beach and 5km walk into the sleepy coastal village of Broome Head. This is a perfect spot for a morning coffee, tea or chai.

After leaving Brooms Head we follow the trail along the top of the headland before dropping back down to the coast with the remainder along the beach; we have plenty of time to enjoy the walk, keep an eye out for the bottlenose dolphin, seabirds and whales during migrating season. The Sandon campsite is on the outlet of the Sandon River, where you can rest or explore before another delicious dinner.

Day 3

17.5 km | Sandon River to Boorkoom Campground
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner

After breakfast, we head off to the river’s edge to get ferried across the Sandon River. We walk through the small fishing hamlet of Sandon. We then head out to the beach and have a morning walking along the isolated Sandon Back beach all the way down to Illaroo. Lunch at Minnie Waters is a surprise with a fair chance of seagulls chasing after a chip or two. We climb off the beach after lunch and wander through paperbark trees and the literal forests before finishing of the day with a mixture of beaches. Rock platforms and a chance for a beach shower under the spouts at Diggers Camp.

The days walk along the edge of the Solitary Island Marine Park is our first long day. The reward is Boorkoom Campground, a beautiful and quiet campsite nestled above a rugged but sheltered bay.

Day 4

14km | Boorkoom to Station Creek
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Today we start off with a walk through the tree covered Wilsons Headland with stunning view from above the cliffs. Wooli can be seen in the distance, and we spend the second half of our morning walking along Wooli Beach into the coastal village.

We make our second river crossing over the Wooli River landing on the southern rock wall where we disembark and head back out to the coast. Our afternoon is spent walking across beautiful pebbly beaches and some stretched of rock platforms. This section is the most challenging of the walk and we have sections where we will need to select our route based on the tides.

After navigating the tidal rock platforms, we make our way along Freshwater Beach through beautiful Pebbly Beach before rolling up our pants, taking our boots off and wading across Station Creek. It’s just a 750m walk inland to our last camp amongst the scribbly gum forest.

Day 5

7.8km | Station Creek to Red Rock

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

We start our day with a 2.3km stroll around the Corkwood and Scribbly Gum walking track before a hearty breakfast.

This is our last morning, and we can take it easy. We have a 6.8km stroll from camp to the Corindi River, mostly along the beach. It’s a great time to reflect on the journey, enjoy one last swim and say goodbye to the ever-present dolphins. We take another small boat ride across the river and celebrate the completion of our walk when we hit dry land again.

Our transport collects us from Red Rock and we have a delicious lunch on the  way back to Yamba at an iconic Clarence Valley location, arriving back in Yamba by mid-afternoon.
