Day 1
7 km | Unicorn Falls to Sand Ridge Camp
Meals: morning coffee – lunch and dinner
We pick you up at around 8:30 and transport you through the Byron hinterland and into the Tweed Valley, the heart of the Wollumbin Caldera. We will stop at the village of Uki in the Tweed Valley for a morning coffee or chai; our last little bit of civilisation before we hike. We continue to the trailhead at Unicorn Falls carpark where we do a gear check and don our packs. The start of our hike takes us through eucalypt forests and to the riparian-lined cascade of Unicorn Falls.
We leave the falls and make our way along the newly opened “old peoples track”. We have our first real break along Whisky Creek; this is the perfect spot to enjoy freshly made salad rolls for lunch.
After lunch we climb out of the valley and see a change in the vegetation before dropping back down to the unlikely named Hells Hole for a freshen-up in the creek and a mid-afternoon rest. We then continue onto our first night camp arriving in time to settle into the first night in this ancient Gondwana Rainforest.

Today is our most challenging day with over 1000 stairs to climb; so we start with a hearty breakfast and fresh coffee. We spend time walking amongst the ancient old-growth blackbutt forest skirting the warm temperate rainforest.
At the Tweed Valley lookout, we will stop for a well-earned rest and lunch soaking up panoramic views of the ever-present Wollumbin in the distance.
The forest has opened again, and most of the climbing has been done. We can take a 500m side trip to a third lookout at Mount Jerusalem Cliffs with expansive views across Doon Doon Creek to Doughboy Mountain and the Border Ranges National Park on the opposite side of the caldera. Shortly afterwards we leave Mount Jerusalem National Park and transition into the Nightcap National Park and the vegetation changes again. We hike along the historic Postman’s Track section of the trail, with our last views of the Tweed Valley and we catch a glimpse of the ocean and maybe Cape Byron Light House on a clear day. A highlight is the ancient Postman’s tree along the last section for the day before we reach our campsite for the night.
